ROSEN has built a reputation for successfully inspecting assets that have been deemed ‚unpiggable‘ by others. One such asset type is that of loading lines.
Inspecting loading lines proves critical in two ways: On the one hand they are essential parts of a pipeline network, ensuring the transport of product from and/or into the distribution system. On the other hand, the very fact that they are situated in a partially submarine environment makes their inspection a challenge. This was also the case with a 40” loading line in Asia Pacific. The line in question transports crude oil from a local tank farm to sea-going vessels, using a subsea PLEM (pipeline end manifold) for their loading.
Plans to replace the existing PLEM with a modified construction required an onsite report to identify features greater than or equal to 50 percent wall loss and any metal loss resulting in >10 percent wall loss for the last 500 meters before the PLEM. This inspection had to be completed within three working days at the most. This information would assist in best determining the cut-in point when replacing the PLEM, so that the pipe that was in poor condition could also be removed and/or replaced during the modification exercise. In addition, as the replacement would require a lifting of the pipe above the water line, any detected defects that could worsen during the lifting operation needed to be repaired prior to any movement of the pipe.
