Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT)
EMAT is a non-destructive testing technology that has applications in a wide range of industrial sectors. EMAT is generally used to assess the condition of manufactured objects and the technology is particularly effective for detection of stress corrosion cracking and disbonded coating.
THE PRINCIPLE
The EMAT generates an ultrasonic pulse within a metallic and/or ferromagnetic test object. The sound waves are generated in the material and thus no couplant is needed.

Consisting of a magnet and an electrical coil, the EMAT uses electro-magnetic forces to introduce sound energy into the test object through a combination of Lorentz Force and Magnetostriction.

APPLICATIONS
EMAT technology:
- Is sensitive to cracks and mill-related features.
- Enables detection of coating disbondment and identification of different types of coating.
- Facilitates measurement of wall thickness and possible metal loss.
